![]() The royal coins of the mint at Sardis that were studied with advanced non-destructive methods contain 55% gold, plus or minus 2%, which could only be so voluntarily. The reason emerged around the year 2000, when the exciting discovery was made that the Lydians could control the gold content of their electrum coins closely. Why did the Lydians coin the electrum? After all, they could simply have circulated the unadulterated metal, cut into proper parts, as money. ![]() It is therefore considered likely now that the Lydians obtained their electrum instead from the northwest region of their empire, in today’s Turkey. But in the early 2010s, the startling discovery was made through mineralogical research that the flow of precious metal from the Pactolus River must have been pure gold (Cahill et al. For many years, the general professional opinion was that electrum flowed directly down from the Pactolus River right beside the city of Sardis. ![]() The Lydians must also have possessed large deposits of the alloy to be tempted to monetise it despite its unfortunate features. But if so, they manifestly found it more economical to coin the electrum. There is some speculation that the Lydians could have separated the gold and silver earlier had they wanted to. The refinery dates to about the time when King Croesus of Lydia decided to substitute fresh gold coins for the electrum ones. Field research in the late 1960s uncovered remains of a refinery for separating unadulterated electrum between the metals on the site of Sardis, capital of Lydia. But they did not know how their ability to divide up electrum between silver and gold came later. Had the Lydians known how to separate the raw electrum between gold and silver, they might well have done so. When Lydia decided to coin, money was already widely present in the form of gold and silver in its trading region for centuries. As a corollary, the subsequent coinage in silver in Greece, beginning about 80 years later, requires a separate explanation. Interestingly, it is the very uncertainty of the value of electrum that is the key to the benefit of its coinage. But more recently, the logic of the Lydian choice has emerged. Therefore, the metal would seem to be a particularly poor choice for coinage, and it was widely considered so until recent decades. Electrum is an alloy of gold and silver that varies in its natural state between 65% and 85% gold, and neither weighing nor the touchstone can tell the percentage in between with any precision. Another rarity is the NJB’s transliteration of the divine name (the Hebrew tetragrammaton) as “Yahweh.” The NJB comes with its own set of notes, and these reflect a mix of traditional and critical approaches. It is fairly literal, but includes some intriguing poetical influences (including translation work by J.R.R. The NJB, however, is not based on this French translation but on the original biblical languages. The original translation was mixed bag: literal in some respects, but with a loosely translated Old Testament text made up of a combination of various textual traditions. ![]() The New Jerusalem Bible is the 1985 update to the 1966 Jerusalem Bible-a translation that itself is based on the French La Bible de Jérusalem translated by the faculty of the Dominican Biblical School in Jerusalem. ![]() The RSV has no notes that go along with the translation, so different study Bibles exist based on the translation. The RSV is both a common choice among scholars and one of the most beautiful English translation of the Bible available today. Unlike the NABRE or the RSV’s modern revision, the New Revised Standard Version, the RSV is not “gender-inclusive” and it translates pronouns and other gender-indicative words according to the original text (for example, it does not add “and sisters” to the original word for “brothers”). It is a literal, word-for-word translation that uses “King James English” (“thee” and “thou”) when addressing God, but is otherwise translated into today’s English. The Revised Standard Version is a 1950s-era revision of the King James Version (the RSV Catholic Second Edition includes the deuterocanonical books). So whether it is a simple pew Bible, a youth Bible, or a full-sized family Bible, readers get the same notes. This is an important consideration, because every edition of the NABRE is required have the same footnotes. Some conservative Catholics have also criticized the translation’s notes, which reflect many modern critical theories concerning the Bible’s origins (such as assigning late dates to biblical writings, claiming that some books are pseudonymous, affirming the JEPD theory of mosaic authorship and the “Q” gospel, and even suggesting that the Gospel writers modified historical truths to suit their agendas). ![]() The translation is most notably criticized for its avoidance of gender-indicative terminology whenever possible, including references to God. The NABRE is a “formal equivalent” translation, which means it is not a literal word-for-word rendering of the original text but not a paraphrase either. When the Old Testament was revised, it was officially replaced by the New American Bible Revised Edition. The New American Bible was the first Catholic translation made directly from the original biblical languages (rather than from the Latin Vulgate). The New American Bible-Revised Edition (NABRE) Let me share some thoughts on the most readily available Catholic study bibles on the market today.įirst, let’s look at the three contemporary Catholic Scripture translations that are used for most Catholic study bibles. Although their differences present nothing like the range of options found in Protestantism, they can be important nonetheless. That said, there exists a spectrum of Catholic study bibles created by the scriptural translations and study tools. This is unsurprising the large selection of Protestant study bibles reflects the number and diversity of Protestant beliefs. This is because there are fewer translations that contain the full canon of Scripture (including the deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament), and the number of such bibles that include study tools is smaller. ![]() Choosing a study Bible is a lot easier for Catholics than it is for Protestants! ![]() While the numbers were impressive, some bad business decisions left Dobson’s business in a $2.1 million deficit. When thinking about your basement laundry room ideas for organization, you want to consider a few things like space, workflow, and necessity. Okay, now all of the harder (and boring) stuff is out of the way. Basement Laundry Room Ideas for Organization You are going to need as much inspiration as possible. ![]() Doing the laundry is already a daunting task. When it comes to your floors you want lighter colors that will make the space look bigger and just brighter and more welcoming. You want to have basement flooring that is relatively easy to clean and will be difficult to scuff or damage when you are moving your washer and dryer into your space. Typically, the flooring space in many laundry room layouts is some sort of tile or laminate/hardwood variety. Regardless of the method, you use to light your basement, you have plenty of options to create a well-lit space to do your laundry. If you decide to wait until after the build or if your ceilings are too low for the previous option, you can incorporate other lighting sources into the space as part of the decor such as a true flush mount fixture. This is the point when you decide if you want overhead lighting and how you want that lighting to look and function in the space. During the initial remodel of your basement, there will be discussions of how your want your space to be wired. You can incorporate appropriate lighting to brighten up the space easily via two methods: Also, your finished basement laundry room doesn’t have to be the creepy basement like the one that terrified Kevin on Home Alone with the scary furnace. ![]() Your days of going to a dark, dim, and dreary laundromat are over. This can be mitigated by considering all of the costs ahead of time and planning accordingly to avoid shortcuts that could turn into more expensive fixes later. One of the major issues with building a laundry room is the cost of the remodel. This is going to be useful information at the beginning of your remodel when you are working on your insulation, building walls, electrical wiring, and building your floor. You are also going to need a vent for your dryer that goes outside to prevent house fires. You are going to need ventilation for the amount of heat produced by your dryer. You may need a larger or even a second water heater if you are a family that washes clothes frequently. You are going to need plumbing for your washer and if you decide to incorporate a sink to wash out those delicates. Laundry Room Functionalityīefore you start construction on your new laundry room, you are going to want to think about all of the elements of what is going to be needed for your space. Finished Basement Plus is here to help you even if you are starting from scratch. Now that you are considering what to do with your newly finished basement, you may be considering building a laundry room to suit you and your family. So, keep these finished basement laundry room ideas in mind when you’re updating your basement! From using laundromats, apartment complexes with a simple stackable washer and dryer, or washer and dryer hook-ups to having your own washer and dryer in your own home, you have to admit it is a pretty sweet perk to owning your own home. “One trick to help beautify a laundry room is to use an extra-deep kitchen sink instead of a plastic utility tub.Possibly one of the simplest luxuries that can come with owning your own house is having your own washer and dryer. “There can be a lot going on in a laundry room, making it feel like a jumble, so keeping everything white helps to unify the space,” says Ingrid. “When you use big-box-store cabinetry, it’s nice to balance it with higher-end natural stone counters,” says Ingrid.Ĭlosed storage hides bulky items and unsightly cleaning supplies, while open shelving displays the neat necessities. This allowed her to splurge on marble countertops. Working within a strict budget, Ingrid had to be creative with her choices: she opted for ready-made cabinets (painted to match the custom floating shelves) coated the backsplash with a durable, washable paint and selected a basic washer and dryer. The designer also had to take into account the fact that the small space was going to be used as storage and a cleanup area for kids after playtime. “This style of door was specifically chosen because it lets light in,” explains Ingrid. The homeowner tasked Ingrid Oomen with developing a seamless design for a 70-square-foot laundry room because it’s visible through French doors off a high-traffic corridor. Despite its tiny size, this basement laundry room designed by Toronto-based Ingrid Oomen is big on both function and style. ![]() It has mysteries and story beats that tie together seamlessly.īetween those beats is the rest of the game, which, while stable, is just south of fully functional. Immediately after, you’re thrown into your adventure as the bounty hunter. It opens on a robed person strapped down to a chair before a strange mark burns onto the screen. Whack Westįrom the get-go, Weird West‘s world and story are innately intriguing. It’s a disappointing finale when the remainder of the game’s cast is so colorful. Instead, they’re a blank slate, and their story simply points towards the end of the game. ![]() Unlike the rest though, the game’s last story doesn’t examine the character that players fill the shoes of at all. The bounty hunter’s story (the first in the game) is one of the most exciting, and the second is one of the most interesting. I only wish that all five of the stories told in Weird West were given the same amount of energy. There’s magic in seeing a world change because of your actions, and Weird West has that in spades. Choices in Weird West lead to my favorite kind of consequences: Visible ones. Whatever you do in the world will, in some way, be shown to you - and not in the same way that Skyrim did, where you’d kill a world-destroying dragon and be called a nobody. Killing a character or leaving them alive changes main quests, saving people or leaving them to die changes locations. ![]() In a moment that hooked me into the game, I realized that I had turned a major boss into a simple paycheck.Ĭhoices and consequences in Weird West overlap each character, making the game just about as immersive sim as it gets. I ended up taking his poster off a bounty board with another different character, just because I needed the cash. I opted for the former, and when I started my adventure as the game’s second character, found a newspaper that said the gang boss was still alive and that his group was still kidnapping people across the west. At the end of the first character’s act, for instance, I could either immediately save my husband or chase after the boss of the gang that kidnapped him. Every decision - including whether or not players pursue some optional objectives - feeds into the development of the game’s world and its ending. The passage of time is just one of the many variables Weird West keeps track of. An adventure might feel like it took 20 minutes, but for the character, it’s been a week. Similarly, time passes as players travel from town to abandoned mine and back to town. Weird West takes the same approach to travel as the original Fallout, where each location is its own zone that players have to travel between on the map. Only a corner of the game’s sizable map is visible - though it’s not like you’ll actually see every inch of it. In a moment that hooked me into the game, I realized that I had turned a major boss into a simple paycheck.Īt this point, traveling across the West is at its most exciting. To do so, I could kill the owner and find out or wait for night and sneak in through the window. I quickly notice that there’s a house on the farm, which I could break into if I so dared. At the start of the mission, my first goal was to retrieve my horse. I started by traveling to another farmstead, and immediately, Weird West showed me that I was allowed to do whatever I wanted. Players start off as a woman whose husband is kidnapped, forcing her to pick up her guns and return to her bounty hunting ways as she tracks the villains that took her man.ĭuring this first adventure, the West is large, scary, and strange. ![]() Each is unique to the game’s setting in their own way. Weird West doesn’t put players into the shoes of one cowpoke, but five different figures. Instead, Weird West‘s take on a fictional American frontier meets Dungeons & Dragons hosts the most engaging stories, even when it shows its janky side. It clearly has Dishonored‘s bones, offering players multiple ways to sort out encounters, though it lacks the same polish. Weird West, an immersive sim from two of the minds behind Dishonored, is a much more unique story. That’s how I was originally sold on Weird West.īut Weird West is not a cowboy game.
So much so, he had no qualms about seeking their assistance in bringing to Jesus’ attention the plight of his sick servant. ![]() Yet, this centurion seems to have secured a favorable relationship with the village and the leaders therein. History often shows that people are generally not favorable to those who invade their lands and take over. ![]() “When he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.” Many are familiar with the animosity that was present in that day between the Jewish people and their oppressors of the Roman Empire. Either by way of others, or maybe even having the chance to witness it himself, he found out that Jesus heals and sought His help. Being stationed in Capernaum, Jesus’ home base of ministry, it was only a matter of time before he became exposed to His miracles and teachings. We are not sure exactly when or where he became aware of Jesus. Therefore, out of his concern he sought for the only remedy he could – Jesus. Whatever brought on this disease it seemed to progress to the point of agony, causing the centurion to believe his servant’s life was in danger. ![]() From this description, we know that he suffered from pain and was paralyzed. The point is, the individual of his concern was “sick, and ready to die.” When we read of the same account in Matthew it tells us he was, “sick of the palsy, grievously tormented,” (Matthew 8:6). Again, this is far from the idea of these soldiers we know of. With the usage of the word “dear”, it points out his genuine concern and affection for this particular servant. He had a “servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die,” (vs. This may not be the normal picture of a Roman soldier that immediately comes to mind, but it was for this man. The centurion’s position was prestigious nonetheless, he had a compassionate side and cared for those under him. And though considered not one of the people, his faith, as Jesus will note, was exhibited to a greater degree than those of His own people. He has authority (of which will be discussed later). He is a man who is a leader during the Roman occupation of the land. He is known as a “centurion,” meaning in charge of hundreds. The possessor of that “great faith” enters the scene when someone near to him falls to the afflictions of sickness and no other help will do outside of the intervention of Jesus. Therefore, this small village of only approximately 1,500 people or so became etched in history as a place where Jesus walked and taught a place where miracles were performed, and faith was noted as being great for one man. People also knew this was a place where He could probably be found and sought for Him there (see John 6:24). He is noted on several occasions as going to Capernaum (see Matthew 4:13 Luke 4:31 John 2:12, and so on). More known to us today, it was the place considered to be home-base of operations or headquarters, if you will, of Jesus’ ministry. “Capernaum,” situated on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, was known for fishing and trade. Jesus ends chapter 6 inquiring “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46), comparing the foundations of their spiritual lives.Īfter this teaching session, “when he ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.” He also pointed out “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good,” (Luke 6:45). He interjected these lessons with questions and spiritual insights including once asking “Can the blind lead the blind?” (Luke 6:39). And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.”īefore arriving at today’s lesson, Jesus taught a powerful sermon consisting of blessings and woes. And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. Luke 7:1-3 “Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. Ethnicity, background, and prestige all fall away in the eyes of our Savior whose only view is that of an opened heart filled with belief.
